Lorenz sought scientific certainty, but discovered scientific unpredictability. He asked this question: “Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?” Scientists are still seeking the answer. Our church family celebrated Easter via Zoom last month. Our pastor led worship from her living room. Behind her left shoulder, I saw a paper butterfly in full flap. The butterfly has become a fashionable Easter symbol for many people, pointing to the dramatic body change from caterpillar to flying beauty.īut recently, I’ve seen how the “butterfly effect” impacts us both spiritually and scientifically. I’d known something of the meteorological reference to the “butterfly effect” for years. It was most famously mentioned in 1972 by meteorologist Edward Lorenz in a presentation to a science convention. ![]() Ling ma stories5/13/2023 ![]() They take place in little pockets removed from “real” life, whatever that means: inside a parallel world hidden behind a wardrobe at a cultish festival in a fictional country on a protracted vacation in a “de-Americanized” world in an MFA workshop. The stories of “Bliss Montage” keep the cover’s cheeky promise. The title and Ma's name are ruffled too, as if the author herself were shrink-wrapping delicious pleasure into a denatured product. On the cover of “Bliss Montage,” clear plastic clings to the nubbled curves of oranges, suffocating all that sunshine-y zing. ![]() Ma tells us what it looks like because she knows it matters. It’s a story collection “with a vaguely Chinese cover image of persimmons in a Ming dynasty bowl.” The image implies tradition and delicacy, pretty stories of domestic imbalance and clichéd Eastern promises of good fortune. ![]() In “Peking Duck,” one of the standout stories in Ling Ma’s collection, “ Bliss Montage,” a young writer presents an early copy of her new book to her mother. ![]() One of my former editors once told me not to mention a book’s cover in a review - that it cheapened the words inside by tying them to the work of the publicity and marketing buzzards. ![]() Pete the cat talent show trouble5/13/2023 ![]() There are now almost 100 published Pete the Cat titles with more coming out all the time. James Dean’s art has been sold in more than ninety galleries and shops across the United States. The little blue cat showed up as a character in James’s artwork around 1999 and has been a permanent fixture ever since. It was during this time that he began creating paintings and drawing of his cat, Pete. Gortner began by introducing himself and describing his career path. He drew a good crowd, too – we had a full house and even ran out of chairs as latecomers trickled in. So fast forward a few weeks and BAM, Gortner is in the Village House. I’d seen Gortner several years back when he was promoting The Last Queen so I knew he was an entertaining guy, and if he was gossiping about one of the world’s most influential fashion designers it could only be amazing. They were game, so I sent out some e-mails and pretty soon we had Gortner on the calendar for a talk and signing. Gortner was coming out with a new book about Coco Chanel, I asked the owners if I could try to set up a book signing. Some middle and high school readers will connect to this feeling of not existing. Tiny’s first rule, if you are going to be a thief, you don’t exist, creates a striking comparison between thieves and refugees-to be successful at either one, you cannot exist. The chapters in three-fourths of the book begin with a succinct rule. However, l ike other young people who come up against the complexity of life, Tina runs out of rules for the traumatic situations she finds herself navigating while discovering difficult truths. The novel is an interesting coming of age story as the children uncover secrets from the past, face choices their parents made, all while trying to establish their own identity. To prove his father’s innocence, Michael embarks on the journey with Tina to find out who murdered her mother. ![]() She is caught by a childhood friend, Michael, the son of the man Tiny thinks killed her mother.
